What is Whistleblowers?
Whistleblowers is the first step in becoming a Merit Badge Umpire. It runs on a Saturday morning, over 4 consecutive weeks at CNA (course dates are determined by the Development Director at CNA). It is designed to help facilitate the learning and confidence of potential umpires. All you need is basic understanding of netball, whether you're a player or a long term supporter, to get involved and it is a perfect program for those who find themselves wanting to know more about the game we love. Umpires must be deemed competent in Whistleblowers before progressing to JOSUPs.
All whistleblower participants will require a water bottle, finger whistle, hair tie and please wear appropriate sports shoes and a white shirt (over your uniform is fine).
4
What is JOSUPs?
JOSUPs is an advanced 6 week umpiring course, that can be completed once an umpire is deemed competent at Wistleblowers. Whilst completing the course participants are initially shadowed by a more experienced umpire until they are deemed competent and pass the course. Once the participants pass JOSUPs and are umpiring on their own, they will receive the umpiring merit badge which is a recognised qualification of Netball Queensland.
5
As a parent what can I do to help my child achieve their merit badge for umpiring?
-
Get your child to blow their whistle at home (loudly outside). Stand a decent distance away from each other, to replicate a game scenario (and at an appropriate time or course) and call stepping, obstruction etc. This will help them projected their voice to the required volume.
-
Quiz your child on the required hand signals when at home and get them to demonstrate them to you (refer to the umpire rule book to assist).
-
Quiz your child on what they would do in certain scenario’s (refer to the umpire rule book for examples).
-
Has your child read the rule book for umpiring?
-
Is your child volunteering to umpire games at training on a Thursday to practice umpiring?
The onus is on parents and the child to get to the required standard of a merit badged umpire. A mentor can only do so much and there are only so many available each week.
To get to the required standard we all need to adopt a proactive engagement method, as suggested above. Practice makes progress. If this is done, as in the past, the umpire will get to the required standard.
